Developing Service Learning Opportunities

Do you have a volunteer opportunity or a real need that students can help you meet?

The following questions may help you determine if you have or might develop a service-learning opportunity that is both valuable to the community and will strengthen student learning.

  • What is the mission or purpose of the organization?

  • What are its current goals and projects? What challenges does your organization face in working toward its mission?

  • How might youth help it reach its current and future goals?

  • Is that organization working to prevent as well as serve a community need?

  • How might youth help as volunteers, develop valuable products, help shape thoughtful public policy, or provide input into planning? For example could students help write articles for newsletters, develop a public information campaign or assist with a research project? Could they put on special assemblies for younger children, provide support staff for special events or help produce public art?
If you are interested in exploring ideas more or posting a project contact Kate McPherson, Director of Project Service Leadership at (360) 576-5070 or at mcphers@pacifier.com.
